One of the most challenging times of year for dental health is the Halloween trick or treating season. Kids tend to eat more candy during this time than any other time of the year. However, with a little forethought and diligence, you can make sure that the extra candy doesn't lead to extra cavities.
Dr. Margaret Mitchell, DDS, owner of Mitchell Dental Spa a dental spa facility in Chicago’s Water Tower Place, offers the following tips to help protect your kids' teeth during Halloween:
- Prior to Halloween, visit your dentist to have sealants put onto your kids' teeth to seal and protect the enamel grooves.
- There isn't any particular time of day that is better or worse to eat candy. Regardless of when they eat it, they should do the following things to mitigate the effects of the cavity causing ingredients.
- Avoid sticky candy such as taffy, gummy bears, caramel, etc. Sticky Candy adheres to teeth and causes decay more quickly than other types of candy.
- Brush immediately after eating candy, especially sticky candy. This will reduce the ability of the sugars and acidic ingredients to effects your children's teeth.
- Have you children chew gum with zylitol sweetener which some tests have shown to prevent tooth decay. Orbit and Trident are two brands that have zylitol sweetener.
With these simple precautions, your children can have a fun Halloween without destroying their teeth in the process. Have a wonderful Halloween and great fun trick or treating.
