I'm Bad! a new childrens' book, will definitely appeal to kids who love dinosaurs, in particular those who love the T-Rex. The character, a young tyrannosaurus talks about how fierce and mighty he is. He talks big about how he’ll catch his lunch, but he has trouble delivering on the boast. At the end he gets his lunch from a rather unexpected source.
The illustrations are a lot of fun with the tyrannosaurus character fairly bursting from the page at times. One page is designed like a large hidden picture puzzle with dinosaurs drawn hidden within the foliage of the page. Which is sure to thrill little kids as they go on their very own dinosaur hunt. A few of the illustrations seem to have gotten a little muddy color-wise, but overall they are fun and colorful with a lot of kid appeal.
The language of the book is supposed to have the sound of a street savvy kid, but I find the grammar problematic for little kids, unless the parents or teachers go out of their way to explain that this isn’t the way they are supposed to speak. Sentences start with “Got my _____ “ dropping “I have or I’ve.” The entire story is written with street slang vernacular, which although cute could be very problematic for young kids trying to learn basic sentence structure and grammar.
If you are trying to further your child’s ability to read and write, this book would not be on my list of suggested reading. If, however, you are just looking for a fun read-aloud book, then I’m Bad! way be just the ticket.
