New
Money
You may have seen the new bills that are now beginning circulation.
They have a larger, off center portrait and brand new serial number
designs. There is only one Federal Reserve Seal instead of different
seals for each Reserve Bank. There is a watermark in the figure
of the portrait, and many areas with micro printing. A new security
fiber has been threaded through each different bill. The $5, $10,
and $20 bills say USA FIVE, USA TEN, and USA TWENTY over and over
across the thread. The higher bills say USA 50, USA 100 and so
on. If you hold the bill up to a light you can see it better.
The new bills are also printed with O.V.I. or Optically Variable
Ink. This ink changes from green to black when you view it from
different angles. If you have a new bill, you can see this clearly
on the number in the lower right corner of you bill.
Worn
Out Currency
The money that’s in circulation is eventually destroyed
by Federal Reserve Banks. Over four billion $1 bills are in circulation,
but each one only lasts about 18 months before it is replaced
with a new bill. If you have pieces of bills they should be sent
by registered mail to the:
Department of the Treasury
Bureau of Engraving & Printing OCS/BEPA
P.O. Box 37048
